This article comes from a book given by Revd. G. D. Melhuish, the rector at Ashwater, in August 1929 to my grandfather,
Joseph Hart, who at that time owned Ashwater Barton. I was told when I was young that my grandfather had done
some carving in the church but I cannot recall exactly what pieces.
The book contains clippings from the parish magazine where Revd. Melhuish published these articles and quite
a few handwritten extra notes of interest.
Judging by the clippings it must have spanned about 30 issues with parts being published
each month.
It obviously took a lot of time, research and enthusiasm for him to compile this so I felt it would be worth some of my time to make it available to anyone who may be interested. I have reproduced it as close to the original as I could but have changed the order in some places to try to get fairly consistent chapters. I have also added a few extra notes where I thought it may be helpful.
There are several things I intend to add to this but that will be a gradual process.
